Career in STEM Series 1: Website Heroes Webinar

2021-05-11

Girls Go Tech is launching a new series called ‘Career in STEM!’ We will hold three virtual sessions for participants to learn about different STEM related industries and inform their decisions around university subject choices and career planning. This will help participants understand a range of career opportunities and what qualifications and experience will help them get there.

The first session in the ‘Career in STEM’ series is taking place on Friday May 14th: Website Heroes.

We browse lots of websites every day, some are user-friendly, some are not. They are all built by software engineers. Software engineers create websites using different programming languages, turning code into tools that do the work for us. Did you know that a lot of these engineers behind the scenes are women?

In this webinar, we’ll hear from two website heroes. Lily Yung, a software engineer at Goldman Sachs, will speak about one of the strengths needed in programming: good communication skills. Cheryl To, a 3rd year university student studying computer science will talk about her internship in the government and what she has learnt from the STEM competitions she has participated in, including as the winner of Nasa Space Apps Challenge 2019 - Galactic Impact Award and the Hong Kong Computer Society Outstanding ICT Women Awards 2020 - Rising Star Award.
